Storing and Protecting Files Using Web Hosting
Websites perform functions like podcasts, hosting games, video streaming and hosting pictures and images through files stored on the internet. Hence web hosts offer file storage facility in their hosting package. This facility is so important that when website owners try to choose a good web host, they first check whether the web host can store their specific files safely and meet the purpose of these files. Web site owners have several options regarding safe storage of files online through web hosting.
A website owner can store his files in the web space that comes along with each web hosting package. The files are stored on the web host server in your own website domain. This method is very easy. But it has its drawbacks. Most web hosts offer only limited web space to the user in each web hosting plan. So you can’t use this method for extensive storage of files. Moreover if people link straight to your files your bandwidth will be used up fast.
You can alternatively host your files in remotely located websites dedicated to file storage function. An example of such a website is Box.Net. The files are uploaded on the servers of these sites so that you can hotlink the files from those servers. These websites enable storage of numerous files and saving of bandwidth on your own web host because you are not using your web space to house your files.
The remote websites enable safe storage of files. But if there is any technical problem with that website your files may get down or deleted. Hence it is good idea to always take back up of your files and store them in a different location such as your own computer or your own server.
If your files are image files then you have additional options of safe file storage. These files can be stored in dedicated image hosting web venues. Some popular image hosting directories are Flickr and Imageshack. They enable remote hosting of your images and pictures. You can save your bandwidth provided by your own web host. These online image directories are pretty safe.
The bandwidth constraints of these remote dedicated image web hosts can become an issue especially when you host high resolution images on them. However in such cases the bigger image hosting directories like Flickr may be used. They have more bandwidth and lesser downtime making them an ideal option for your image file hosting.
