Starting a small business: the steps you have to take
Setting out and starting a small business means you have to have several qualities in you, such as determination, knowledge, resourcefulness and of course the drive and motivation to succeed. Here’s what you need to know when starting a small business.
Know the opportunity
Know what kind of business you’re looking to take advantage of and build a plan for it. Know the skills you have to offer and the position the market is in. Is it an emerging industry, a saturated one or is it dying out? Build a plan to understand the industry landscape and get hold of the money you need to make your dream a reality once you have zeroed in on what has to be done.
Get the start-up money
You have to put your money where your mouth is, so get the start-up funds if you don’t have it already. For instance, a retail store or franchise might need hundreds of thousands of dollars but a consultancy will only need a few thousands. Know how much money you need and how you’re going to go about getting that money.
Pick a name
Shakespeare might wonder what’s in a name, but you shouldn’t. The right name will set you apart from the competition and give your customers a reason to remember and hire you. It’s all a part of the branding process, so find out what you’re going to name your business.
Choose a structure
Is yours going to be an LLC, sole proprietorship, partnership or corporation? All of this affects your business liability and so you have to choose the right business structure to suit your needs. As your business grows, the structure might change, so don’t worry about that. But do pick the right one to begin with.
Get the location and permits
You need to pick the right location and fill in all the right paperwork and regulatory mechanisms. Look at all the paperwork you might need and setup the office in the right location with the right equipment.
