Take lessons from Harvard business plan contest judges
The University of Harvard each year organizes business plan contest that allows hordes of entrepreneurs to present business plan. This contest is not a recently thought up plan but rather it is continuing since 1997. The contest was initiated with motive to inspire the Harvard business school students to take the shape of successful entrepreneur. The contest has spawned some of the noted names in the business like Michael Bloomberg and Tom Stemberg. These entrepreneurs started their career through this business plan contest. The contest gives exposure to an entrepreneur to a drove of investors and venture capitalists.
The judges of this contest gauge a plan in all possible ways to find the practical relevance of the plan. There are several parameters, based on which the judgments are made. Of late, I was lucky enough to jolt up some of the issues that this contest judges take account for. These will act as a good chunk of advices for the people who want to appear for the contest or who is up to making a business plan for himself.
Simplifying is the first task that an entrepreneur can be suggested when it comes to creating a business plan. The judges who will gauge the plans need to fathom a business objective and the way it will be realized. This calls for the use of a language that every judge will understand. Furthermore, the judges are selected on the basis of their merit and can belong to various backgrounds. So it is imperative to communicate in a way that can be best understood by all of them, irrespective of the fired in which they belong.
Too much of flamboyance can ruin the possibility of a contestant to win the race. There are instances where contestants have elaborately stated their business and their products. They have intricately explained how their product will perform in the market. But too much of information eventually confused the judges and the contestant couldn’t strike the right chord. So the demonstration needs to be in a simple form and use as much information as is needed.
Almost every company forgets to provide the testimonial of their product from the customers. This tactics can make an entrepreneur stay out of the crowd easily, yet people seem to take little notice abut it. Carefully choose the early users of your products and make use of the early users while giving the demonstration.
Finally, passion is an important fervor in making the business and the young entrepreneurs often win the race as they are able to show up their fervor. However, too much of it will be a show off and can be considered as pretension. After all a really passionate person who has love for the product or service he will render will have the right passion required.
