Principles of Visionary Leadership



One of the most essential qualities that a CEO must possess is the ability of observing things. The CEO of an organization must have the ability of observing while sitting on his company’s periphery; this should be followed by taking actions based on those observations. This mode of leadership is technically referred to as visionary leadership. Below, we have discussed the principles of visionary leadership.

  1. Visionary leaders must perform on-site observations, which will lead to personal perceptions of changes occurring in our societal values according to the viewpoint of an outsider.
  2. Visionary leaders must not give up to the resistance offered to them. Instead they should work by squeezing the resistance in between the pressure coming from outside and instructions.
  3. Transformations always begin with symbolic disruptions of traditional or old systems that used to run an organization. The transformation procedure involves efforts of creating chaos in the organization.
  4. Directions of transformations must be illustrated using symbolic visible images and symbolic behaviors of the visionary leader.
  5. A successful transformation is only possible by quick establishment of new behavioral, organizational and physical systems.
  6. For enabling transformation in an organization, presence of a real change leader is necessary.
  7. Transformation also requires creating innovative systems for providing feedback of the results.
  8. Last, but not the least, creating a daily operations system is extremely important. This includes a fresh work structure, improved activities and a fresh approach towards human abilities.

Following these principles, the first task of true visionary leaders is training themselves for perceiving societal requirements for the future, based on business perspectives. By observing the functioning of their respective organizations as outsiders, CEOs can obtain fresh perspectives and understand their companies’ societal needs for the future. For obtaining fresh perspectives, the CEO must forget all his existing customers and consider the whole world as his organization’s customer base.

When a new idea comes up, often it sounds to be a crazy one initially. Thus, one of the most essential principles for visionary leaders is not giving up under any circumstances. Instead they should communicate their new ideas to the outer world. This will help them by creating outside-in pressures.

Visionary leaders should be successful in creating strong belief on the societal changes and they must be aware of the right ways of transforming their businesses. For having the right perception of the societal changes, visionary leaders must possess the ability of understanding the activities taking place in the company. For introducing transformations in this organization, a CEO must keep on working relentlessly for structuring a fresh mental model. This would make the process of altering the mindsets much simpler; the entire process of transformation will take place smoothly. During this process, the visionary leader must be ready to experience some symbolic disruption, which is common whenever an old construction is pulled down and replaced by a new construction featuring absolutely untraditional architecture. However, during the transformation, the visionary CEO must make sure that core value of his company stays the same.
