Is Disruptive Leadership, the rise of an un-welcomed Storm?

While many argue about leadership dilemmas ever rising in organizational management system, it really can create havoc when disruptive leadership challenges the smooth functioning in an organization. Managers and leaders are the sole persons running an entire management and processes system in a company, these are the extraordinary people handling the hiccups in the company that disrupts its functioning. Managers are hired to solve company problems while paradoxically leaders are meant to create problems, in some cases creating problems welcomes a new change and in some cases it can collapse the whole working system. Problem solving people working in a team are often selected to be young managers cause their function is to keep solving problems created by their respective leaders. A manager requires interpersonal skills, problem solving techniques and competencies to handle a team and most importantly managers should be comfortable with the people in solving their problems.

So the question is, why any leader would like to create a problem at first place? These are the intentional problems created by leaders to bring in a positive change in the running system, to motivate their employees, to innovate or might be for implementing some cost effective methods in their processes. The normal human tendencies indulge in solving the problems of a company, getting rid of unwanted complexities and taking up extra ordinary challenges. The different stages of leadership pass through various stages of learning, developing, implementing, executing, learning from the experiences, and taking actions. Although there are leaders, who don’t go through this particular ladder of learning and go on to create history because they are the ones who envision the future and believe in executing what they have planned.

Leaders are developed with the set mind of managing the chaos as also looking after the company processes, these are the competitive leaders of today who develop the sense of innovation in its peers and strike a competitive balance. The organizational leaders go through competitive environment, they are trained to manage a change and if they don’t possess the quality of adapting to new changes, they can create havoc in the management system and disrupt its working – these are our DISRUPTIVE LEADERS, who are responsible for stagnating the growth of a company and often we see the company policies keep changing time and again.

Taking a back seat and looking at the history, I have seen how companies like Ford had been innovative and always been ready for a change in every stage of its growth, and although they kept driving change in their processes, they never faced any failure, is it some type of magic mantra they use or is there a method by which leaders don’t face any failures? It was in the year 1908, Henry Ford decided to make it possible for every household in the US to own a car, this was the time when only 2% of the population could afford the car. The average household income of the families in the US was $750, so he faced an unsolvable problem of capturing the rest 98% of the market. It was in the year 1908; Model T was launched for $850, which was later sold for $290 in the year 1924, that was the time when most of the US population owned an automobile. By reducing the cost of vehicle, the unsolvable problem, which Henry Ford created for himself got solved, this was the time when people had more choices as GM came up few of its own models and so the competition grew and each company got a good competitive market to sell their products.

Similarly, Sony created same type of problem in the year 1979 when it invented the Walkman, which would allow an individual to listen music privately, by this time no one even thought of inventing such a device, which was unknown to the people, and it gets difficult to change their mindset relating to using some particular device. Leaders are the ones who have strong intrapersonal skills, following change is difficult when they have this specific characteristic, and leaders learn their ability to learn even more in the cases of uncertainty. These are the superb examples of how leaders can foresee a future change, they might be criticized at first but they go on to create history in their work lives.

Disruptive leaders are not always at fault, they bring in problems to create a new history, although they might go wrong sometimes, but they are with some purpose and the people willing to take bigger risks and they do not necessarily create problems always, once when they create problem which are intentional they find a permanent solution to it which helps them develop their growth even further. Like the way the captain of ship minds his routes properly and pays attention to the steering of his ship taking preventive measures in case of storms, he is well committed to return back to his shore without any damages. The main function he does is to remain Focused on his task and be attentive of changing weather similarly; leaders are well aware of their routes and take precautions in case of any disruptions in the market.
