A Diminishing Concept in Modern Organizations

Coteries have been playing important part in the business organisation since ages as they are the eyes and ears of the management play the role trusted confidants of the promoters of business and this coteries provide all the relevant information unfiltered to the management, which they collect meeting and interacting people at work places or during coffee breaks, and this helps the management to revise and devise the strategy for the work force constantly.

However with passage of time, the concept of Coterie is losing ground, for the managements have analyzed and evaluated that the information passed by these confidants tend to prejudice their decision making by passing on only selective information and which in turn leads to the demoralisation of the team ,and invariably the rate of attrition increases.

Senior managements have realised that the Coteries tend to use their position to enhance their career, and at the same time present a tainted picture of the co workers, which has lead to a breakdown and lack of trust between the organisation and its team.

The new mantra opted by the business organisations is to encourage and promote anonymous feedback from all its employees, have warm informal interactions outside work places with all employees. Often this process is initiated from the bottom to the top motivating the team to give their unbiased opinion with- out any fear or restriction and this has improved the relations between the management and the workers, has slowed down the rate of attrition. Besides this there is also a huge flow of ideas, methods, strategy which has impacted positively on the organisation.

Thus, the new organizational theory does not encourage the trend of Coteries. Rather, it has a more democratic and unbiased approach of lending a patient ear to each and every person.
