According to Ben and Jerry’s co-founder, Ben Cohen stated that if progressive thinking gets too far of convention it can lead to some disastrous effects to the company. He experiences this when he had started a company especially to help the environment.

The CEO of Apparel Source Inc., Duncan Berry faced ethical dilemma when he learned that his company produced massive amounts of pollution. He was an ardent environmentalist and believed in greener environment.

The environmentally conscious companies actually recycle their obsolete computers rather than leaving them in a landfill to fester for years together.

A young entrepreneur helps the disadvantaged minority section of the society and the younger population to get in the technical position.

A restaurateur in Philadelphia helps create a social change by donating a part of her profits to charity and also help the socially conscious restaurants network to bring in more customers.

This sounds like a little titter bitter sentence, but some of you might really agree, we change completely when we are in dark or supposedly when we are alone or we know for sure that no one is watching us. In this symphony, there are times even when our moral values restrict us, we do what is convenient to us only to save time, or money and those we do against our ethical values. In our daily life, we bend our own rules to get benefits or avoid the pains, which might go on in to achieving some target. Whatever, you are today is based is build up on your character which have been developed since all these years. What you speak, what you think, what you behave like are the true colors of your character, your character is like your internal compass which guides you to do a particular thing or react to something understandably.

We pass through different circumstances in life and each one of it has some lesson to teach, you might not know it now but may be later stages of life. Every moment of our existence is a lesson to learn and experience something new that shapes our values and also the character. You might agree with me to the fact, that we act different although we might be thinking differently for someone or something. I have often seen while driving to my morning gym session, people taking illegal car turns because no one is watching in the mornings, now that if you truly stand by your ethics and moral standards for a country, you wouldn’t do that, would you? While the story during any emergency is different, but do you feel that action clearly states something about your character, well it says the fact, that no one is watching so head on! Nobody really cares for moral values where everywhere we get to see so much of corruption and people blindly without giving it a second thought follow it.

Some people are of the character, they don’t care for anything, they do as they please while you might behave like a proper gentleman in a company meeting and the same night you disrespect a women, now that you know that it is not going to have any impact on your reputation because no one from the company has seen it. While this may be case in our daily lives too, people act differently outside but inside story is something else, couples being lovey-dovey or standing close hand-in-hand doesn’t signify their true love, they want to show world how happy they are and that they are really living a high-life. Every character has 2 sides of the coin, one that behaves as it is and the one that is trying to behave something else and the character may be even more loose when it comes to pride and the ego in an individual, the morality factor dies in your when you want to prove yourself right, that’s your ego which governs your true character, and you don’t even bother to speak any shit even when standing in front your company CEO. Now that’s a twist in the character which is more self centered and egocentric.

A strong character has 2 basic foundation stones one is integrity and the other is courage, you loose out on your integrity when you try to prove yourself right and other’s behavior start affecting your mental state. Have the courage to face the truth, don’t hide behind the bushes to save your face, the fact will remain forever, even when you are out so why not face it now?

In a world of global competition, it gets difficult to stay by your true values, business values, moral values, ethical values, business rules, etc. everybody has their own purpose in life and so go on to fulfill their desires and ambitions, while some may have company commitments to get those added perks and benefits while some work for their own personal goal. There are so many discourses and workshops happening that teaches you ethical values but we don’t really follow them and speaking in ideal terms, they have been incapable of delivering the results, its really high time now that we start thinking ethical stuff and be ethical in our behavior or whatever we do. You may have or must have come across many a articles in newspapers or magazine talking about political corruption, the use of diplomacy in companies, the greed factor, etc. we often here such news in TV or newspapers and the number is growing by the day, what may be the cause of this, have people lost their moral values, do they have ethical understanding of things or whether they are just doing it for the heck of it, is it for fun or just doing for personal gains? The only solution we have now is to spread a word of moral value, which will be instilled in them deeper in hearts.

Business ethics are especially important today because companies are doing business at larger scale and that would mean larger work force there is dependency on each other to get the output, if one goes fail then everything else or everybody else suffers. When a person is firm on his ethics, we are sure that nothing would go wrong and if at all he makes mistakes, we can show him sensible course of action, which would change the results. Some people might mistake moral values for ethical values and vice versa, although they sound very similar there is some difference in them the morals are external things, and are a set of imposed rules while ethics are based on principles which a person follows from the very start, its an individual thinking of each person. For a person to study proper ethical values it is very important to let him know the ethical understanding and what stands the base for these values.

For our better understanding, we can distinguish the stages of ethical understanding, each playing a different role though all are inter connected:

The very first stage of ethical understanding is the obedience and punishment stage where a person tries to avoid the punishment and he may give excuses like, “there is no point in getting in to trouble”.

The second stage is that of self-interest and a person might be very eager to behave nicely because he expects some reward and the mental thinking of that person is “if I do this, I will get that”.

The third stage is the conformity stage, this stage a person is already gaining some intangible reward and he thinks, this honor will surely please some of his close family members.

The forth stage is that of authority in which a person is seeking a good social status and gaining reputation and he thinks, that people will treat me as a respectful person in whatever field he might be in.

The fifth stage is socially driven, a person has some behavioral changes, which turns into his principles now they stand on the fact that, “living a good life is being considerate of others”.

The sixth stage is ethically driven stage where in a person sets some values which he will follow and makes his aim to follow the personal ethical code.

People who follow their duties and principles religiously are the ones successful in life, the most successful of people I have seen are stuck in stage 1 and 2, some of them don’t even go beyond that stage, none of these stages require the ethical thoughts to move one, its only in the later stages, they require some thoughts relating to personal choice and reflection of their actions. The only advice is want to give you is don’t go overboard or set some ethical standards to please others in authority, be in your own control and take the steps which are really needed, the real true value of ethics will arise when people think over the subject matter and values it. Ethics are different from morals, we have seen that earlier, Ethics means exploring our own self and take your thoughts to a more moral or valued destination, ethics are not to be imposed, they develop within one’s own inner self and it’s the idea of living freely with ethical values instilled.
